There is milsurp and milsurp. If it is truly "Surplus" it will be for a reason...its time ex etc, or has been sitting about in a store/desert for decades.

A lot of the military stuff is hot. Many years ago I remember a competitive pistol shot (He was using a Browning Hi power, that should date it) who categorically refused to put Mk 2Z through his pistol, preffering to hand load.

I have never got results anywhere near my hand loads for any of my rifles from factory or surplus and have found that the main cost of handloading for my AR15 (CSR) is time. The nearest thing to my handloads are M262 Blackhills (painfully expensive if you can get it, particualrly in CSR volume....I have 700 stashed about somewhere I was given), and with even surplus coming in at 42-45p a pop, hand loading significantly better ammo at 35p or less is a no brainer.

The re-loading gear does not need to cost an arm and a leg as there is plenty about second hand or at reasonable prices.

Its an individual thing to be fair, but I find that most, once they have tried decent hand loads, dont go back if they dont need to.

I carefully calculated my savings from handloading versus factory in order to refute the statement that "you'll struggle to save money on reloading over buying GGG ammo", but the simple fact is, if I had to spend 79p per round on GGG instead of 40p on a handload I most definitely wouldn't be shooting 2500+ rounds per year, so I'm not *really* saving £975 per annum to spend on reloading kit.

The fact is, thanks to handloading my ammo lockers are always well-stocked and I shoot more and more often (which has done more for my performance than anything else); I find the process relaxing and therapeutic, and I enjoy developing and improving it; The only time I even think about the cost of ammo is when considering competitions that insist on factory (almost all of which I avoid).

Just one warning: It can become a bit of an obsession.

Once again fellas thanks for the guidance.
Whilst we have drifted onto reloading another question pops up.........
My granted centrefire ammo limit is 1000 rounds so if I have the made up ammo in the safe and also have reloading consumables in stock to make another 1000 rounds am I still on the right side of the law as long as they are not made up into usable ammo?

:good: thanks Halodin.

I think I'll go shopping tomorrow and finish buying the reloading kit.

2z was loaded hot as ammunition for SMG's, not a real problem in military weapons it just worked them harder, although I did try some I acquired in my Beretta 92 I was advised not to due to the open slide design with less strength than a Browning which was a shame as plenty was available at the time ;)
What is a Sapper? This versatile genius condenses the whole system of military engineering and all that is useful and practical. He is a man of all work of the Army and the public ready to do anything or go anywhere, in short, he is a Sapper.

During my time in the RAF Pistol Club, I fired plenty of 2Z through Brownings.... it wasn't particularly pleasant to shoot, but very accurate. The other ammo, (MEN?) was much more pleasant..
