do you have a friend you could borrow while doing this? simplest thing i could see would be to load one round, have them hold some cardboard about a foot over your receiver to deflect the brass as you shoot.

Just get a very large cardboard box.
Cut a hole in both ends. One for legs and the other for barrel.
Lay under box.

I think I actually have one of those 'fishnet' style brass catchers somewhere, I got it before getting a rigid one from the place JMC67 suggested. I seem to remember it didn't work properly in the correctly orientated 3 o'clock position, so goodness knows what would happen at the 12 o'clock with the net draped to one side.... Then again I suppose all it has to do is stop the brass without dinging the cases up. I think i'll have a look for it when I get home, worth a try at least....

I was also thinking about a net above the rifle, or even something as simple as a sheet of heavy gauge cardboard angled to ping the brass off to one side (that's if the brass didn't just imbed itself in the card!!)

I did contemplate setting out a tarp in front with a curled front lip to catch the cases but the RCO might get a bit fidgety if I'm leaning forward to pick up the cases... Why can't someone invent a brass magnet FGS!

I know how precious Saddler is about his children, sorry guinea pigs so I wouldn't want to risk them scalding their paws!

I was cursing myself a bit when I found out the .223 version has a 1 in 7 twist so needs a 'heavy' bullet to get the most out of it, and wishing I'd gone for a 7.62x39mm but a couple of friends who have AK's have said they're starting to have difficulty getting even milsurp rounds for a decent price locally.

How about something like this with a clear plastic top section on the front end? It would be easy to make, fold up.... and keep you dry.

Re; the brass - I've found my old net style brass catcher and I'm going to try that initially. Attaching it to the gun in a manner that covered the ejection port and doesn't interfere with the operation of the gun or get in the way of the sight is, um, 'interesting'
