A short review of the MAS 36.

As for ugly, I don't think they are - but then again beauty is in the eye of the beholder. :D

Basically 2 things happened this week that got me thinking:

1. I was out culling deer on a property new to me, slipped in mud and dropped my Steyr SSG69 down a gulley - ouch

2. I visited a dealer who had literally bins full of these ex-french rifles which are in excellent condition (yeah, i know; shot once, dropped once!) and just aren't moving.

So, i though perhaps i should get one, trim up the stock a bit, mount a decent scope and moderator and use it for the rougher night shooting. I rarely shoot deer beyond 200yds in the dark and usually take head and neck shots (to preserve meat value). So, considering the rifle is basically in un-issued condition, will it be capable of 2-3inches at 200yds?

I don't want to get into the project until i hear real experiences with these rifles.

Thanks

Marc

If cheap enough get one, got good strong action (unlike a renault clio). As above you can get ammo for them, why not eh ?

Without looking I think MAS stands for "military arms Saint etienne" and MAC is "military arms chatteralaut"

I took mine to the range on Saturday I hand loaded for it using 155g Scenars in.308
with VitN140 powder as a experiment. All I can say is WOW. I am taking it out again to morrow to try it at 200 and 300yds. Love this rifle.

Yeah,

I bought one in the end for the pricely sum of £195. It appeared totally unused and never shot.

It's now with a gunsmith mate who likes to tinker, is manufacturing a scope rail, altering the stock, bedding, etc.

I'll post pics when it comes back.

How are you going to fit a scope rail.
I have one for mine tried it and took it straight back off scope to near my nose for my liking.
Be interested to know how he is going to mount it.
I dont have a problem with the stock.

Alpha,

Have a Google search on ' Fusil FR F1
et FR F2'.

Show the snipers rifles made on 36 basis. You will find pictures on how the scope is mounted.

Notice the stock extension

I am quite sure conversion parts, scope fittings and hardware are available in France, although I do not know where. I simmply remember havng seen them on a gunshow.

That's an interesting thing to be admitting to. Night shooting of deer used to be an offence; is it no longer?
