Firing pin protrusion gauges

#1 Post by ovenpaa »

Some market research - I want to measure the firing pin protrusion on my P14 so I will make myself a universal firing pin protrusion pin gauge so I was thinking of building half a dozen and supplying them with a long travel 0-1" .001" increment DTI for around the GBP39.99 mark delivered, the tooling would be made from 316 Stainless and would be nice and shiny.

Is there a market for such a thing? I am not looking for orders just if there is a demand for such a thing.

Pardon if this question seems silly but when you say universal, do you mean it will be able to measure other fp protrusion (Barnard, Quadlock, Panda, ect)?

Id happily have one for my shooting toolbox, been a bit concerned about my no4s protrusion for a while and fultons refused to gauge it.

That is the plan, I can only base it on the rifles I have and the rifles I know however I am fairly sure I can build a 'reasonably' universal firing pin protrusion gauge for full bore rifles.

In fact if people send me pictures of their bolt faces I can confirm or add them where possible.

David,
.223 casehead family is 9,6mm
-Russian-PPC is 11,20mm
.308 is 12mm
Magnums is 13,6mm
-Most rimmed are under 14mm with most of the cases a flat bolthead.

FP tips dimensions are between 1,6 and 2mm. The larger I know is 2,5mm

From that t is easy to predict a protrusion gauge is easily 'universal'..

I do agree Robert and the only real problem one is the .223 bolt face so I am thinking of making it reversible so just pull the gauge out, reverse the sleeve and you are good for the small bolt face. The reason for this is to give a more stable platform for measuring the other bolt faces but having said that if someone wants to measure a bolt face I would expect them to have a degree of mechanical empathy.

Unlike my wife who has no mechanical empathy what so ever :?

David,

She has many other qualities and you are there for the technicalities LOL

Yes, reversible is the way to go.

Setting a protrusion right now for the 59 and having let mine go to Australia, I reaise how useful this little gadget was, therefore, I want fiirst place in the queue for one of yours.... and do not wait for the Boutet stuff, I have all the necessary....
