Just add the right tyres and a Jimny will go anywhere.

I had mine 5 years before the rust got the better.

..
SJ's have leaf springs, Jimny has coil springs, fuel injection, cam chain from '01.

Out of your budget, but what I want next is a KAP Landmaster.

I dont get on with bikes so thats a no no. I still remember the CG125 I had 8-) I used to fall of that on flat tarmac so I'd be off in seconds on uneven ground :D

Check autotrader and ebay then, plenty to be had in your price range.

Check the car tax and insurance costs on them before buying.

On the plus side of an old Landy pre 1977 registered is it's road tax free (historic vehicle) and it's a rolling exemption so every year that get pushed up a year. That's a huge saving compared to a more modern 4X4. Fully comp insurance is cheap as chips - £75 for me with legal assistance included.
You might just manage a road legal Landy on your budget as a rolling tidy up project. Parts are dirt cheap for regular maintenance and even quite hefty parts - and plenty of stuff to be had at auto jumbles and Ebay etc. for agreeable money. And Landys that become loved hold their prices well too. Worth considering the big picture.
