Winchester History Book

#1 Post by fra150l »

I have a great book on Marlin rifle history ( Marlin Firearms: A History of the Guns and the Company That Made Them ), looking for similar for Winchester - primarily lever action rifles.

An internet search brings up plenty of books but looking for something with detail of the rifle models differences, history of changes with dates etc. Serial numbers, calibers, sights all the usual for a good reference book.

Any recommendations??

I have Winchester Repeating Arms Company - Its History and Development From 1865 to 1981. It's a soft back, largely black and white from the Guns Digest publishers I think. Don't know if it would be what you're looking for as I haven't read it!!

I think the book you need is The Winchester Book by George Madis. Expensive but has everything you are looking for.

Yes that's the definitive one that's the equivalent to your book on Marlins.

Never liked the Madis book.

More inclined to get the single topic volumes on specific Winchester guns;
Dreams of Youth, on the .22 single shots
Rifleman's Rifle, on the Model 70 (& Model 54),
The Winchester 94, er, on the Winchester 94 (just in case SimG is browsing & gets confused dot com on the subject matter of THAT buk)

The Madis book, at 650 plus pages, is the best one stop reference for anyone interested in the history of Winchester rifles, with production figures, serial numbers (some of these are a little out) and optional extras. Since it was first published in 1961 it has obviously been used by other authors writing on the subject as the serial number mistakes have been repeated in these later books. There is no mechanical information - parts diagrams etc. - in the book but as a history of the various models it cannot be beaten IMHO.
