Scope for a No.4

I have a SMLE (1917) that I have a non gunsmith scope mount and scope on it.

It is set up like that for my son so He can shoot my SMLE or His inheritance as He calls it, my son is registered blind the advantage of this setup is I can take the mount off and use it and put it on when he uses it.

I take it in these circumstances you will approve of a scope on an old battle rifle?

If you knew me you would know exactly what my answer to that would be.....

My comments are aimed at the plethora of lazy b****** that cant be bothered to put the time in or want to fool themselves they are a good shot.

People half my age in good health that all think they are Harry Furness and believe getting a V bull on a tin hat target with a scope and a bipod is a genuine achievement and tell everyone so.....right until they realise the rest are doing it with irons.

John and I share a long standing joke where I bitch at TR shooters and people abusing battle rifles (any model, I don't care) and he takes the p*** out of me generally and has a pop at Fclass.

So no, while I would personally prefer to do my damndest to be true to myself and the rifles I attempt to shoot, I have no beef whatsoever with people quietly enjoying their sport, particularly if it means they would not otherwise be able to do so.

So good luck to you and your nipper, if I am about and he wants to shoot something else he can shoot my old heap.

Maggot I thought under the circumstances you would approve my son can put most of the shots resting his elbows on a 200 metre mcqueens target he will never win any of the club competitions but the club secretary has commented that he shots better than some of the other members.
He enjoys his shooting whether rifles shotguns and air guns.
As for me iron sights were all we had as youngsters so it is a bit of nostalgia.

Its funny but that's why I got my No4 (nostalgia) and now find I am using it for shooting CSR. Not sure what the rifle did to deserve that but its a challenge.

So its gone from my least used to my most used....which has made me sell up my redundant FTR kit to fund a decent AR so after this season the Lee gets a rest.

So I went from the F1 of shooting tesnews to the arse end of shooting (cos I always seem to be on my arse end trying to get it right)....cant beat it though.

Its a funny old world innit. Full circle and back to doing what I used to get paid to do (I was crap at it then as well).

Even now I look at my 6 month old grandson and wonder how I can wangle him into shooting (cant see that personally....mind you I call him bam bam out of earshot so there may be hope) although I reckon one of the 2 grand daughters might...Dad shoots as well

Well I found the perfect scope - a 1950s Pecar 4-10 x 45, with 1" tube (so easy to mount) and a fine cross-hair...would really suit the rifle...

...unfortunately it was an old link, and the scope is long gone

But I am sold on the idea; so the plan now is to just buy some thing cheap and cheerful (which I might later put on my Ruger, which currently has a cheap and quite crap scope on it) to be able to start shooting the new rifle, while we wait for the right period scope to come up...

...also all this looking at scopes has made me appreciate why shooters can be willing to pay so much for a decent scope.

That's true J. Folk often hang onto good glass but rifles come an go.

As long as it holds zero and you can hit stuff with it as far as you need to, its not crap.

Thanks mate; but the plan changed again ( ) - Turns out that there isn't anything 'cheap and cheerful' that would suit both purposes...

...so we decided that while we would still like a period scope at some point in the future, we needed something functional from the start for the No.4 - So today I've ordered a Nikon M-223 4-16x42mm...it's ideal for the intended uses (would be a good CSR scope too) with a simple cross-hair, simple focusing and a quick adjustment system for elevation...

...the seller (in the US) also had a Leupold VX-1 4-12x40mm at a very good price which would be perfect for my Marlin...so what could I do?...that's what credit cards are for right

It can be interchanged between rifles in about ten minutes or the rifles returned to as original. The rifles are not damaged in anyway and are great fun to shoot.

Yes they are both cracking rifles. I got them from Bob Burgess ...Arundel Classic guns. He imported them from South Carolina USA. I believe the dealers name was Brain Dix. (though I'm not sure) The No4 came smothered in grease and wrapped in the original preservative wrapper. It had only fired its proofing rounds.

Things are now progressing nicely with this project - I had to go up to Bisley just before Christmas, so took the opportunity to set the scope up on the zero range and create some brass for loading...

...Then yesterday me and my father went to the Tunnel Range (100 yards) to test the position of the cheek-piece, zero it properly and test the first handloads...

...we had a few problems; the range was quite cold, which we expected, but didn't realise the heat off the rifle would mist the scope lenses (others had the same problem too), and you had to be careful to not even breath on it - Also we'd put the cheek-piece too far forward which interfered with the right hand grip...do to time restrictions we just had to crack on and get our testing done; with the scope blurred or not...

We zero'd it first with PPU factory (more cases...) then went on to try our handloads - I'd made up 4 batches, using 39gn and 40gn of N140, with 174gn PPU bullets in half and SMKs in the other half...

...they were all reasonable; but the best group was from 40gn with SMKs:

This is the finished rifle (having moved the cheek-piece back a bit today) - As it was always intended as a 'shooter' and not a 4T replica we decided to put a few spacers (a couple of pieces of an old leather belt) between the butt-stock and the cheek-piece, which combined with the 'low-mounts' on the scope gives a reasonable weld:

We're both very happy with how the rifle shoots, and can't wait now to test it out at some proper distances
